The 'Our Father' is the prayer that Jesus Christ Himself gave to His disciples. It contains everything: a petition for daily bread, for forgiveness, for protection from evil. It is the prayer every Christian knows.
Our Father (text)
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
When to read the Our Father
The 'Our Father' is read: in the morning — to begin the day, in the evening — to end it, before meals, before important tasks, during illness, in times of trouble. It is a universal prayer — suitable for any situation.
Why this prayer is special
This is the only prayer given by Jesus Himself. It is short but contains everything: glory to God, petitions for needs, forgiveness, protection. In reading it, we pray with the words of Christ.
The Our Father as protection
This prayer is read as a protective one: before a journey, before surgery, in danger. It brings peace and the sense that God is near.
