The ninth day after death is a special date. According to Church teaching, until the 9th day the soul is shown the heavenly abodes, and from the 9th to the 40th — the trials. Our prayer during these days is the most important support for the soul.
Prayer for the 9th Day
"O Lord, merciful God, forgive the sins of Thy servant (name), whom we commemorate on the 9th day. Grant his soul peace and the light of Thy Kingdom. Strengthen us, who weep for him, with faith in eternal life. Amen."
Why the 9th Day Specifically
The Church teaches: until the 9th day the soul beholds the heavenly abodes, contemplating the beauty of paradise. After the 9th day it proceeds to the next stage — the trials (ordeals). The prayer of loved ones at this transitional moment is most precious.
What to Do on the 9th Day
Order a memorial service (panikhida) in the church, pray at home, light a candle for the repose. Gather relatives for a memorial meal — remembering the departed with a kind word. The main thing is prayer, not the table.
