Why Is the 40th Day So Important?
According to Orthodox teaching, after death the soul remains near its loved ones for the first three days. From the 3rd to the 9th day it contemplates the heavenly abodes, and from the 9th to the 40th day it is shown the torments of hell. On the 40th day, the soul appears before God and receives its preliminary judgment, awaiting the general resurrection. This is why the prayers of family and friends on this day are so powerful — they support the soul at the most important moment of its journey.
Traditions on the 40th Day
On the 40th day after death, relatives traditionally: attend a memorial service (panikhida) in church, light a candle for the repose of the soul, pray at home (read the Psalter or akathist for the departed), prepare a memorial meal (kutia, pancakes, kolivo), and give alms in the name of the departed.
